With Joe Biden as president-elect, what are the policies for the future that MFOL supports?

Welcome! This last November our country came together to vote. With people voting from mail-in ballots to in-person Election Day voting, 155+ million citizens represented themselves and others. A majority of us are aware of the long-drawn-out process that took place to confirm the results, but it has come to an end, as former Vice-President Joe Biden is 45th president-elect.

As a chapter in March For Our Lives, it feels as if it is our duty to inform those of what we advocate for and what we support. Even though we are a recently formed chapter, all of our members had expressed their voices in the past about what they believe in. The past 4 years, there have been major changes in the government which have set us back in time. As a collective, we believe this new presidency can lead to reform that will benefit the general public and help American become safer and stronger, together.

Climate Change

It’s important to recognize Climate Change as a youth advocacy group. When we state that we have rollbacked in time, it’s true! During this current presidency, the Environmental Protection Agency has undo what was accomplished in the previous presidency. Not only did this current administration clear out protections on clear air and water, but also provided relief to the fossil fuel industry. The plan to keep the planet safe & clean has been an idea that has transitioned between presidencies before, politics having no influence on it. But, this current administration has put forth a lack of effort to make sure our environment is kept healthy. The biggest rollback was the withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, a crucial international agreement to support each other to decrease global carbon emissions.

With Joe Biden as president-elect, it’s possible for us to go back to where we were 4 years ago in terms of scientific understanding by the administration. MFOL Ashburn supports the joining back of the Paris Climate Agreement by the president-elect, as the United States has one of the biggest economies in the world. With this reform in the future, we believe that it will help preserve the nature that we see as beautiful and our land.

Gun Violence Prevention

For gun violence prevention, a statement from MFOL National asks Joe Biden to “take an intersectional, comprehensive approach to preventing gun violence with the goal of reducing gun deaths by 50% in ten years”. We ask the administration to keep in mind of the thousands of lives that are taken from gun violence each year. The gun industry needs to be held accountable for supporting the NRA and allowing this violence to continue. With these steps taken, we can advance the lessening of lives being taken away from gun violence.

Unity

Together, with the help of the Biden administration, progress can be made. But, it can only be carried out if there are advocates that stand beside us to spread the message. Therefore, it’s important for you to take action through non-profit organizations that help your voice to be heard. If you are interested in making a difference, pushing key laws to be passed, and promote reformation, maybe MFOL Ashburn is for you!
